The DC Universe has been home to some of the most iconic superheroes in history, but it’s fair to say that their cinematic outings have been a mixed bag. Some have been critical and commercial successes, while others have been met with disappointment. But which are the best DC Universe films? Here’s our Six of the Best DC movies.

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is widely considered to be one of the greatest superhero films of all time and there’ll be no argument from us. It stars Christian Bale’s Batman was long-considered definitive but the real star of The Dark Knight was Heath Ledger and his breath-taking performance as the Joker. The film is a dark and gritty take on the Batman mythos, and it features some of the best acting, directing, and writing ever seen in a superhero film.

2. Superman: The Movie (1978)

Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie is a classic superhero film that still holds up today. Christopher Reeve’s Clark Kent/Superman is a sensitive, engaging Man of Steel and nobody has yet bettered Margot Kidder as Lois Lane or Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. The film is a heartwarming and inspiring story about the power of good and the importance of truth, justice, and – at a time long before politicians perverted the ideal beyond salvation – the American way.

3. Wonder Woman (2017)

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman was a tough sell. Lynda Carter’s small screen Wonder Woman left a huge pair of knee-length boots to fill, but Gal Gadot’s take on the character is truly special. An Amazonian warrior who leaves her home to fight in World War I, Gadot gives a standout performance as Diana, and the film is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

4. The Suicide Squad (2021)

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a raucous and violent film that tells the story of a group of criminals who are forced to work together on a mission which nobody else can or will (although several have, unsuccessfully). The film is a departure from the more serious and grounded tone of other DC films, and it features some of the best action and humor seen in a superhero film in years.

5. Shazam! (2019)

David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! is a fun and heartwarming film that tells the story of Billy Batson, a young boy who can transform into the superhero Shazam. Zachary Levi gives a great performance as Shazam, and the film is another refreshing change of pace from some of the more po-faced DC films.

6. Teen Titans GO! to the Movies (2018)

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic’s Teen Titans GO! to the Movies is a hilarious and irreverent film that tells the story of the Teen Titans as they try to make their own movie. The film is a great example of how to take a beloved property and put a unique spin on it. It’s fun, true to its origins and laugh-out-loud funny.
